My Anti-Aging Skin Routine

Hi there this is Karen with OperationAwesomeLife.com.  I am really excited to share My Anti-Aging Skin Routine with you today!

It’s no secret that Anti-Aging is on everyone’s mind these days and since I get complimented and asked about my skin often, I thought I’d share some of my tips I’ve learned along the way!

Although I can name quite a few beautiful mid-20’s ladies partaking in the new craze of ‘Botox’ (not necessary in my opinion), sorry, but this is definitely not that kind of advice I am going to give you…

Through many conversations, I am shocked at how many people don’t have a daily/nightly skin care routine. Some ladies don’t even take off their makeup before bed! GROSS!!! Not only does that cause more acne, blemishes, and clogged pores but the long term effects of wrinkles, lines and premature aging are indefinite. No thanks! For proper anti-aging techniques, you will most definitely have to establish these routines, both morning and night, in order to maximize the most for your skin. And I don’t just mean regular soap and water here either!

Anti-Aging Basics And Why Momma Knows Best

But first, lets discuss why taking care of your skin is so important. For me, nighttime anti-aging routines are the most important for many reasons. The main reason is that skin cells rejuvenate, regenerate and repair at night while we sleep. We have all heard that we must drink plenty of water and get adequate amounts of sleep and yes, those are very important but what I’ve found takes a little investment (but its totally worth it) and time.

My Mother never allowed me to use “drugstore” makeup. She always told me that putting better quality products on your skin would pay off in the long run. I think when you are young and youthful its hard to imagine that someday that wont be the case but now that I am in my 30’s, I’m so glad I listened to her!! This is the same advice I am giving you. When it comes to foundations, concealers, serums, and creams, anything that goes into your skin’s pores you want to put the best quality you can afford because someday when you’re in your 60’s, your skin will look like your in your 40’s, just like my Mom! She seriously looks amazing!

So, what is my anti-aging skin routine? Glad you asked!

My Anti-Aging Skin Routine For The Morning

First, I start with a generic makeup remover towelettes. It really doesn’t matter which one but I like the ones by Neutrogena or Equate (pictured below).

Face-Cleaning

Above you can see a picture of towelettes I am currently using.  I go all over my face but mostly focus on my eyes, making sure to remove any eyelashes, ‘sleep’ and/or eye makeup I missed from the night before (so embarrassing).

Then, I cleanse my face once more with the Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief Face Cleanser.  You can see a picture of the face cleanser below.

I love this stuff! Both Matt and I have noticed how calm and smooth it makes our skin! It’s even helped him with some redness!

After the cleansing, I like to apply Origins A Perfect World Age-Defense Skin Guardian with White Tea serum. See what it looks like below.

I use this to hydrate and prep my skin for my foundation. I tend to have very dry skin and I find that if my skin gets too dry, then I tend to break out more. Crazy, huh?!?

On a side note, I currently do not use any creams or makeup with SPF in it. It really is a whole different blog topic but right now I do not feel it is needed as I am not spending much time outside (this explains the “pale” skin haha).

If I am planning a day at the pool or the beach, I do wear sunscreen or a hat to specifically protect my face from premature aging. As a rule of thumb, I really, really try NOT to ever get sunburned! I definitely believe the sun and vitamin D is good for you, but not burning. “Everything in moderation” is our motto!

My Anti-Aging Skin Routine For The Night

The first thing I do for my anti-aging skin care routine before bed is take off the day, literally! I once again use a generic makeup remover towelette. This by no means is enough!! Soap and water is not enough either!

After my makeup is off, I get into the shower. As I’ve gotten older, I have this dire need to shower every night before bed. I just love the feeling of getting into to my nice, warm, comfy bed all clean and free from the grim of the day! Anyone feel me here LOL?!? I know not everyone feels the same and that even most people probably shower in the mornings but you can still do my routine at your bathroom sink.

So anyway, as soon as I get in the shower, I grab my awesome Clarisonic Mia 2. If you don’t own one already, you must! The best way to describe it is like a pedicure for your face.

See the Clarisonic Mia 2 above.  You know how clean, and soft and amazing a pedicure is for your feet? Well, it is just like a pedicure but for your face! It makes your face feel cleaner and smoother than anything else I’ve ever tried!! I get the brush head that is for sensitive skin because if it’s too rough then my skin will get irritated and break out. Currently, I use Clinique’s Foaming Sonic Facial Soap with my Clarisonic.  See below.

After the Clarisonic, I recently started using the Origins Mega Mushroom Relief Face Mask at night. I’ve seen a huge improvement in the texture of my skin on my forehead. See it below.

The only reason I think my forehead has had some issues recently is that it has been hitting record high’s here in Florida and causing us all to sweat a little more than usual. Matt and I both think this Origins Mega Mushroom product really helps soothes and balances the skin. Two thumbs up for this one!

After all the cleansing has been done it is time for the last very important part. This is where I suggest you splurge a bit! But only because your face will thank you for it later on! Head on over to your local department store such as Nordstrom, Macy’s, Dillard’s, Sephora, etc.. and invest in an awesome night cream. I’ll also leave a link here for you if you want to buy it online. I promise you’ll start to see and feel the results fast!!! Matt and I both use Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Night and I can’t rave enough about it! I’ve even seen improvement with the dark circles under my eyes plus my skin feels super soft and smooth!  See the Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Night below.

Other Skin Care Tips I Use For Beautiful Glowing Skin

  • Once a month, do a face mask. This helps bring all the deep-rooted junk to the surface. Schedule this around important events and such as it can tend to make you break out for a couple of days but then it’s followed by beautiful, healthy skin! I recommend Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief Face Mask.
  • Get a chemical peel. I recommend seeing your local dermatologist for this. A peel is great for rejuvenating new smooth skin as it literally peels the top layer of the skin on your face. It is not painful but I really recommend doing this in the winter or colder months when the sun isn’t as intense and you won’t be out in the sun. The sun can be harmful to the new baby skin.
  • Treat yourself to a facial. Facials are great for hydrating and pampering your skin. Hydration is key to anti-aging and keeps your face looking young and healthy plus they feel great too!
  • Purchase a liver detox. See the liver detox I use below.best-liver-detox
  • I bet you were surprised by this one! My doctor, who advises me in a more holistic approach, recommends I do a liver detox every six months. Believe it or not, liver detoxes are great for your skin. By detoxifying the liver the body is able to flush out some of the toxins and other junk. This allows for the body to boost the immune system, clear up acne/skin, aid in weight loss, have more energy and prevent headaches/migraines. Tons of benefits! We use Renew Life Liver Cleanse. We typically purchase it off Amazon.com but any vitamin shop should carry it.
  • Follow a gluten-free diet. Even though we currently aren’t following a 100% gluten-free diet, we did do it last year and WOW! I can honestly say my skin never looked so great! It was clear and bright! Probably it was the best it has been since I entered my 30’s!  Not to mention you just feel absolutely awesome overall, but more on that in a different post. I wanted to throw this tip out there to anyone who have tried different things but still don’t have any luck with getting clear skin. They say 1 in 3 people have a gluten or dairy allergy that might not make you completely ill but that shows through as acne on your skin. Just something to think about or test for yourself.  To see our current diet we are following right now, see Matt’s video blog post here.
