Intermittent Fasting And Coffee

Hey, it’s Matt with operationawesomelife.com. Today I’m going to do a video about intermittent fasting and coffee.

[Video Transcript] What is everyone’s obsession that follows an intermittent fasting diet with drinking coffee?

If you like your favorite cup of Joe and you like to have your coffee, intermittent fasting is a great fit for you and here’s why.

Many people like to use coffee in the morning to “not break their fast”.  Lots of people practicing intermittent fasting don’t eat or break their fast until around 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.

For Karen and myself, we like to break our fast at about 2pm.  Typically, we head over to Starbucks, have ourselves an Americano or a coffee. We don’t get any cream or sugar, at least I don’t, Karen sometimes does.

Starbucks is obviously not a requirement.  Sometimes we go other places to get our coffee or even just make our coffee at home.

The moral of the story is, coffee, in theory, does not break your fast.  So it’s sort of a get out of jail free card so to speak.

What To Do When Hungry Before Breaking Fast Time

When you’re hungry and it’s before your predetermined time to break your fast, having something to turn to is crucial for your success. You either have to turn to water, chewing gum, or something like black coffee that doesn’t have any calories and that won’t break your fast.

If you’re not too sensitive to caffeine, then having a cup of coffee with a little bit of caffeine can help you not be as hungry for a couple more hours. I would suggest waiting to have your coffee as late as possible as well.

I like to start my day by having a lot of water.  Then I will have my coffee around 11:30 or 12:00. That way I only have to go a couple more hours after I drink my coffee until I can actually have my lunch.

If you start your day too soon with coffee, what can actually happen is you get the energy from the caffeine and then you actually fall off the energy cliff, so to speak.

This can cause you to go really low on energy levels and make it very difficult.  Also, that can mess with your blood sugar and make you really want to eat something right away.

By having your coffee too early in the day it can actually make going until 2:00 (or your break-fast time) even more difficult than it would be without the coffee.

I would highly suggest if you are going to implement coffee or tea or something like that in your intermittent fasting diet, to wait as long as you possibly can.

Coffee Suggestions If Your Are Sensitive To Caffeine

Like I said, coffee is a great tool if you’re not too sensitive to the caffeine. If you are sensitive to the caffeine you can always go with a decaf. In fact, I do that a lot of the time.

What I have been doing recently, ever since I started my new intermittent fasting diet plan about 6 weeks ago, is I have been going with roughly 2/3 decaf coffee and then the other 1/3 I’ll do caffeinated coffee.

However, if I go to Starbucks, they load it up their coffee’s with caffeine. On my Americanos, if I get a Grande, I’ll do 2/3 of decaf and 1/3 of caffeinated.  And even doing that, a lot of times it will still be way too much caffeine in my coffee. In fact, this one that I have right here that I’m showing you I’ve actually had for 2 days.

I started drinking it and no joke, about 1/3 of the way into it I was feeling so much energy and I realized I didn’t need anymore. I had to stop yesterday.  And I have continued to drink some today, and yet I’m not even completely finished with it.

Final Thoughts On Intermittent Fasting And Coffee

I hope this helps you guys understand the whole relationship between intermittent fasting and coffee.  It can be an important tool that you can use in your intermittent fasting diet.

It can be really beneficial to help you to hold off on breaking your fast as long as possible.  Just remember to hold off as long as possible to have the coffee or the tea.  If you don’t, you may end up more hungry than without it.
